Regular school attendance is very important for your child’s learning, confidence and friendships. When children attend school every day, they benefit fully from lessons, activities and time with their classmates. Good attendance also helps children develop positive routines and a strong connection with school.
Under the Education (Welfare) Act 2000, children of school-going age are required to attend school every day that the school is open, unless there is a valid reason for their absence.
By law, the school must inform the Educational Welfare Officer (Tusla) if a child misses 20 or more school days during the school year. The school may also need to notify the Educational Welfare Officer if a child is regularly absent and no reasonable explanation has been given.
If your child is absent from school, please let the school know the reason for the absence. A short note or message explaining the reason should be sent to the school when your child returns. Schools are required to record the reason for absences using the categories set by Tusla’s Educational Welfare Service.
We appreciate the support of parents and guardians in helping children attend school regularly and arrive on time each day. Working together helps ensure every child gets the most from their time in school.
Below is information for parents/guardians on how to manage reluctant attendance or school avoidance behaviour.
