Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork
To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Marie-Curie researchers from the Department of Land Sciences at South East Technological University (SETU), Waterford, led an inspiring school visit aimed at encouraging young girls to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Through engaging videos, interactive presentations, personal stories, and hands-on Food Science activities, the initiative sought to spark curiosity and passion for STEM among our girls.
We were delighted to welcome:
Dr. Yuanyuan Pu – Marie Curie alumna, assistant lecturer in Food Science at SETU, Waterford and Bunscoil Parent. Thank you so much to Yuanyuan for organising our involvement in this wonderful opportunity.
Dr. Shannon Gwala – Current Marie-Curie postdoctoral researcher at Teagasc Moorepark, Co. Cork (Food Science)
Dr. Qingsong Zou – Dairy Powder R&D Technologist Lead at DairyGold and Bunscoil parent
We are incredibly grateful to these three outstanding professionals for generously sharing their time, expertise, and enthusiasm with our 5th and 6th class girls. Their kindness and dedication made a lasting impact.
The goal of this initiative was to inspire future STEM stars at Bunscoil, and it was certainly achieved! Our girls thoroughly enjoyed learning about Marie Skłodowska Curie, watching a fascinating presentation, and conducting hands on experiments that brought science to life.
A heartfelt thank you to our fantastic facilitators and everyone who supported this incredible event, particularly:
The Food Programme team, Department of Land Sciences, SETU
MCAA and MCAA Ireland Chapter
Mediterranean Night
Teagasc Moorepark Food Research Centre
Their support helped create an unforgettable experience for our girls, inspiring the next generation of women in science! Teagasc
