Baeltaine 2022
It was great to welcome back some familiar faces and returning guests to our Bealtaine celebrations last month. Welcome back Ms Murphy, Ms Coughlan, Ms Shinnick and Ms Hayes. Music was provided on the day by by staff members Eilís Watson and Pádraig Wallace along with invited musicians Kayren Hayes, Odhran Hayes-Brennan and Liam Roche.
Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural Bealtaine Event, it was decided by our school, to celebrate Bealtaine on an annual basis. Bealtaine is a national festival held throughout the month of May, which celebrates creativity and the arts as we age. This year our invited guests were once again the Mitchelstown Social Hub and also invited this year, were members of Mitchelstown Writers’ Group, along with some recently retired teachers from Bunscoil. Our guest artists for the day were our Champion of Reading, Olivia Hope and also our BLAST artist-in-residence, Avril O’ Brien.
Olivia facilitated a creative thinking and writing workshop with Ms. Walsh’s 6th class, along with members of Mitchelstown Writers’ Group. The theme of the writing workshop was loosely based upon memories of childhood summers in Mitchelstown. 6th class will now write up Diary entries based on the information given by the participants.
Mitchelstown Social Hub were out in force for their visit to Bunscoil. It was great to welcome back the familiar faces of returning guests along with some new faces also. Mitchelstown social hub enjoyed decorating bunting with our artist, Avril O’ Brien. All guests were very well attended to and assisted by our 5th class girls.
Following the art workshop, guests were treated to a reading of Olivia Hope’s debut Picture Book, Be Wild, Little One. Following this, Mr. Wallace played a piece of music titled Melody by Ukrainian composer Myrolslav Skoryk. Second class treated our visitors to the hymn ‘This is the Day’ by Mary Almond O’Brien, which they had sung at their First Holy Communion the previous week. And Mr Wallace’s Junior Infants performed ‘Treehouse’ by Sarah Webb.
Guests were then free to amble inside the hall and along the school corridors to admire all classes art displays. The hall was festooned with all children’s artwork from their Create a Monster Doodle challenge as part of Every Child a Reader.
One of the highlights of the day was gathering outdoors in front of our new mural and using our new dance space outdoors to dance. 3rd class danced to Shoe the Donkey. Music was provided by staff members Eilís Watson and Pádraig Wallace along with invited musicians Kayren Hayes, Odhran Hayes-Brennan and Liam Roche.
Following the exertions and excitement of strutting steps, some welcome refreshments were provided to guests by our Parents Council. Sincere thanks to the 4th class girls, who were busy baking some beautiful cakes, scones and cookies over their weekend for this event.
The day ended with an impromptu sing song in our school hall. We would like to say a huge thank you to amazingly talented Mr Wallace for organizing and coordinating all aspects of this wonderful event and we look forward to Bealtaine 2023!
