Safety peer coaching

Caroline Casey, Cork County Council’s Safety Officer, visited our school in January to give Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Class a talk on Water Safety and Peer Safety Coaching. Caroline spoke to the girls on the topics of water safety, road safety and farm safety. The girls learned lots of songs, rhymes and new information on each of the topics. Fourth Class were then asked to do Peer Safety Coaching and had to teach ten classes, ranging from Junior Infants to Third Class, all that they had learned on safety. The forty pupils from Fourth Class were broken into groups of four. They planned what they would teach to each class and what songs, rhymes and resources they would use. They worked together on their lesson, practiced how to present the lesson and then taught the class they were paired up with. Fourth Class really enjoyed visiting all the classes!

Following the peer safety coaching, we received an invitation from Cork County Council to attend the Safety Flag Awards ceremony on Wednesday in County Hall. Five representatives were picked from Fourth Class to attend the ceremony and were given the opportunity to give a three minute presentation outlining the safety initiatives that they had facilitated in our school and how they would continue this peer learning safety initiative . Elenore Cooke, Ruth Cotter, Aine Finn, Brid O’Gorman and Yvonne Kirwan attended the ceremony with Ms. O’ Dwyer and Ms. Hyland. The girls gave a wonderful presentation of the work that Fourth Class had done and all that they had taught to the classes. They were presented with the Safety Flag for our school by the Mayor of Cork,  Patrick Gerard Murphy and Caroline Casey, Cork County Council’s Safety Officer.

A wonderful day was had by all!

Sincere thanks must go to Caroline Casey for all the work that she has done with our pupils over the years in the area of safety (road, water and farm) and to Cork Council for supporting this initiative.
