Sport in Bunscoil na Toirbhirte

Swimming
In Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, all children from 1st to 6th class are encouraged to attend swimming lessons for 6 weeks each year in The Leisure Centre Fermoy. The swimming is organised by the school and the children are transported to and from the swimming during school hours. The time of year when classes attend depends on the school rota and takes into account times when different age groups are preparing for Communion or Confirmation. The cost of swimming and transport is approximately €35. This is not covered by the school. Parents are given adequate notice to organise for this additional cost.
In addition to swimming lessons, the school partakes in an annual swimming Gala, promoted by the Credit Union. This Gala usually takes place around Easter time. All children who can swim a length of the pool are eligible to attend. It gives willing participants an opportunity to showcase their swimming in a competitive environment.
Athletics
Most years Bunscoil na Toirbhirte takes a group of children to the Cork City Sports (formerly held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh but now operating from CIT Sports grounds). Selection for the sports is done during school by way of trials in one of the local fields. Only 2 girls from each age group are permitted to attend the sports. A relay team for U11 and U13 is also prepared. In the past Bunscoil na Toirbhirte has had huge success at the sports and we hope to continue this legacy into the future.
Dance
It has been a tradition in Bunscoil na Toirbhirte to hold a St Patrick’s Day Céilí. In preparation for this, the teachers in the school teach and practice a number of dances in the weeks prior. The dances include Shoe the Donkey, The Siege of Ennis and The walls of Limerick. We are fortunate enough to have teachers in the school who have huge dance expertise in the area of ballet and Folk dance. Their expertise is often used to coordinate dance performances for the school.
Football
Bunscoil na Toirbhirte has its own football sessions offered to all children between 4th and 6th class. Football takes place mostly after school and there is no charge for this after school activity. Unfortunately, we have no green field area and have to rely on the generosity of St Fanahan’s and Presentation Convent Secondary School for the use of their facilities. Over the years the girls have participated in Sciath na Scol and mini sevens competitions. Organised blitzes between Bunscoil Mitchelstown and Presentation Fermoy take place with the prize being a perpetual plaque. The main aim for school football is participation and to nourish a sense of fairplay in the children. For the past few years we have been indebted to two community individuals for giving support and help at the training sessions. We are very appreciative of their support.
Camogie
Indoor camogie is another after school activity offered to the children of Bunscoil na Toirbhirte. Most years we are lucky enough to get the use of the hall in St Fanahan’s. 4th 5th and 6th class children get the opportunity to play. Some years we attend indoor camogie blitzes. Camogie training offers children the opportunity to experience the sport without investing money in helmets and hurleys. All these are provided by the school.
P.E Lessons
All children from Junior Infants to 6th class are rostered on a time-table to use the hall in the school for two half hour sessions in the week. The school has a considerable amount of equipment including gym mats, class set of skipping ropes, tag rugby class set of tags, class set of tennis racquets and parachutes for cooperative play. The school yard is marked out with hop scotch and jumping snakes. There is also a basketball court around the back of the school. In suitable weather, this area is a great asset.
St Patrick’s Day Céilí
Each year on the day before St Patrick’s Day, the school hosts a whole school céilí. All the parents are invited to attend. A group of musicians play music for the céilí. Bunscoil na Toirbhirte generally hosts three sessions with children from the lower, middle and upper parts of the school. Great energy is used for the hour and a half dancing. In the lead up to the céilí, the children are dancing every day to prepare.
Healthy Eating Policy
In Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, we always promote healthy eating. At regular intervals we explain to the children why healthy eating is so important when playing sport and being active. We believe both healthy eating and regular activity are huge contributors to the wellbeing of children.
